Checked out the petroglyphs, desert blooms, and plenty of red rock beauty. Yep, I really like this place. <br />

I love wading in the river, seeing the desert plants and wildlife, digging my toes into the sand. This is the closest I get to an ocean experience in my land-locked state. The freeway is nearby, but you can easily imagine yourself in the middle of nowhere. <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzpz4u8Thzbpi9KUITfyX8qmh6jerI9QdkbMGs4n5T3ZLlQoJ0bICwIoMRMNmYQ4rTDYmFfxjyeNVxfkBlo-cd-9OBPfKcSvO95IscjLTw2yOufbal39Va3tkG-hED9OI-Ci8-HcZQm12T/s640/blogger-image--1148918665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzpz4u8Thzbpi9KUITfyX8qmh6jerI9QdkbMGs4n5T3ZLlQoJ0bICwIoMRMNmYQ4rTDYmFfxjyeNVxfkBlo-cd-9OBPfKcSvO95IscjLTw2yOufbal39Va3tkG-hED9OI-Ci8-HcZQm12T/s640/blogger-image--1148918665.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpfDnksqkpRuPuvCnLuLbgNqJqS2zwj5muxVaLGAJEwCGzDvCBfiCUwagnUA2o6YGW0sUlSurrP9o4C7NI3UhboEl3wMsFtemV3rMkaqzQ43sy2qNaZTXwmO-7tBpKQfS3crm1n-Zh3_Ke/s640/blogger-image-1521627134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpfDnksqkpRuPuvCnLuLbgNqJqS2zwj5muxVaLGAJEwCGzDvCBfiCUwagnUA2o6YGW0sUlSurrP9o4C7NI3UhboEl3wMsFtemV3rMkaqzQ43sy2qNaZTXwmO-7tBpKQfS3crm1n-Zh3_Ke/s640/blogger-image-1521627134.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC_fZ6dRO2IeA6mPKOfMOPtqHR-v462uhv3II7KijycwiWPBt-4E8sOcyFY9Vye_dwUmjctauPJF3xsnqibKKNtuyKQAxccNW8HcRyjwOFagyjAv6lbIAy10VJETrlPPEj5GimdYexIikb/s640/blogger-image--866861506.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC_fZ6dRO2IeA6mPKOfMOPtqHR-v462uhv3II7KijycwiWPBt-4E8sOcyFY9Vye_dwUmjctauPJF3xsnqibKKNtuyKQAxccNW8HcRyjwOFagyjAv6lbIAy10VJETrlPPEj5GimdYexIikb/s640/blogger-image--866861506.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI6H41r5SLmgcfb7SKJpSlrPnJNdW_ziOZ5xcxdtEKIXls-znC4iDyHvC8TIHwLimq6Saeu6bZI0csCCH8CjOcBpKl_ydw1wdFTihGoHJEOFqgG4_izR5roE5562SK_oA6fxevh3-3kiwa/s640/blogger-image--884371190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI6H41r5SLmgcfb7SKJpSlrPnJNdW_ziOZ5xcxdtEKIXls-znC4iDyHvC8TIHwLimq6Saeu6bZI0csCCH8CjOcBpKl_ydw1wdFTihGoHJEOFqgG4_izR5roE5562SK_oA6fxevh3-3kiwa/s640/blogger-image--884371190.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBS3jWrDe0iUbN2Xs-Gt4eU0QGKFuQmvmYBU3FR8XodY6Lh4lukmpBF_HTIq3Nkrrks_S8bQ4B_tnsq-Rp0AS6kF6UDtS07buWVMx-emODk5otjyHzoztUsE-mNoNyQbBFGBLx0Kl-9CoT/s640/blogger-image--1785916476.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBS3jWrDe0iUbN2Xs-Gt4eU0QGKFuQmvmYBU3FR8XodY6Lh4lukmpBF_HTIq3Nkrrks_S8bQ4B_tnsq-Rp0AS6kF6UDtS07buWVMx-emODk5otjyHzoztUsE-mNoNyQbBFGBLx0Kl-9CoT/s640/blogger-image--1785916476.jpg" /></a></div>Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-73518413462856747092011-11-09T14:23:00.000-08:002011-11-09T14:23:52.759-08:00Looking for fallThe colors are slow to change here, and sometimes they just don't. Sometimes things will be just inching along towards a colorful display and then a frost will hit and all the leaves get kicked off the trees. So a couple of weeks ago, I went off with my hubby and our friend Kyle in search of fall colors. As it turns out, there is a great resource <a href="http://www.scenicsouthernutah.com/fallcolor_report.shtml">online</a> for just such a thing for our area. We went out to Parowan, UT and took the gravel road up to Yankee Meadow and then onto the reservoir. The drive was relaxing and traveling through varying altitudes gave us a variety of shots.<br />

I used my Polaroid SX70 Alpha camera for the square shots and my Keystone 60 Second Everflash for the others. I love that I can decide what mood I want by choosing the format and color tones based on camera and film choice. And, as always, I love unpredictable nature of using expired of experimental film. I mean, who would have thought that snow would come out looking more like a creamy sunshine yellow or that a field of aspens would come out so rosy? </div>Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-66618629774697515512011-10-18T13:39:00.000-07:002011-10-18T13:40:21.464-07:00Retablos, 2011<a href="http://thedesertlovesyou.blogspot.com/2011/10/dia-de-los-muertos.html">Remember when</a> I wrote about the retablos at the Lawndale Gallery? Well, guess what? They're in and they're up. And because I'm so very excited to be a part of this along with my mom and our friend Louise, I'm sharing photos that Lawndale put up on their flickr page...<br />
<br />
First, Louise's cool Sphinx Moth:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6095/6244533178_1a3b6ec7cf_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6095/6244533178_1a3b6ec7cf_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span><br />
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></span></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
Louise Schlachter, "Ghost Orchid - Sphinx Moth" -- </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;">Iridescent ink </span><br />
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 15px;"><br /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Retablo 258. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Louise has had moths as a long-running subject in her pieces. They are really well drawn, scrawled, and painted into being and each one of them has its own personality. She also makes the most interesting background textures for her moths-- some look like bark, some like lichen-covered stone, some like leaves gone all blurry... You can read more about her <a href="http://home.earthlink.net/~motherdogstudios/motherdogstudios/id20.html">HERE</a>.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Then my mom's piece: </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6161/6244476956_552d07427e_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6161/6244476956_552d07427e_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Janina Stout, "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;">Survived Wild Fires IX / 2011" --</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;">Acrylic, burned wood and glue</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Retablo 155.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My mom got to experience some of the Texas wildfires up close and personal--a little too close for comfort, really. But her little family there as well as the property survived, and now she gets to share her story visually. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My piece: </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #fefefe; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 15px;">I actually intended on having the nail put under the drift wood so that there would be a space under the wood and the retablo, but I like what they did with it, too. This piece is in memory of our dear little kitty Leo. I found him as a kitten in a window well and took him and his sister in. After finding a home for his more social sister, Jon and I ended up taking him in "temporarily" but he won us over with his antics and love of cuddling. He went missing one day around the same time as our neighbors moved away... and he hasn't been back since. We only hope that he is as loved wherever he is now...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

They provide tins for artists to paint on, draw on, etch, cut into, etc... The pieces are to be informed by the practice of painting <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retablo">retablos</a>, or ex-voto. It is a devotional art and is traditionally done in a folk style. But that's not to say that an artist can't know of the tradition of the retablo and then veer far away from its roots (and still come up with something amazing).<br />
<br />
Dia de los Muertos was a part of my childhood growing up in Houston, Texas. My mother further informed me about it when she did a few projects associated with the holiday while she was working towards her teaching degree. I love the mystery and the personal stories of retablos. I can't wait to see them in whatever fashion I can.<br />
<br />
The gallery has already started <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lawndaleartcenter/6220758989/">putting up pieces</a> for this year, but the rest won't be posted until later. If you want, you can check out to see the ones from <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lawndaleartcenter/sets/72157622407164257/">2009</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lawndaleartcenter/sets/72157625003863617/">2010</a>. There are some really inventive and creative pieces in the mix.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
The Lawndale gives out the tins for free, and when returned, the completed pieces go on auction. Part or all of the proceeds of the sale then go to help run the gallery (depending on what the artist wants). I'm all for keeping the Lawndale up and running. And I am so excited to be a part of this tradition. Normally it is only locals who can get their hands on the tins before they run out, but this year I got permission from the gallery to have my mom pick up a tin for herself as well as one for me. She mailed me a blank tin, I took it in, thought over it, and painted a little something, and then mailed the finished piece back to my mom, who then took in her piece and mine to the gallery. So exciting! The only thing that could make it better would be to have even more loved ones involved.<br />
<br />
I've met a few of the artists that will be contributing work this year, but I am most excited about having a piece at Lawndale along with my mother and her (and my) dear friend Louise. These are two women that I've looked up to for ages, and it is just such a happy thought to be in a show with them.<br />
<br />
Here is a photo of the three of us taken at The Big Show at Lawndale back in 2008:<br />

I made it as a gift to my friend with a new baby girl. I wanted to make something for a girl and yet with a modern kick. So I chose to make a pink and white chevron quilt. (Inspiration found <a href="http://aquiltisnice.blogspot.com/2008/09/zig-zag-quilt-kit-tutorial.html">HERE</a>.) And while pink isn't usually my color of choice, I figured it was time to try something new. Plus I hoped that by making it in pinks I'd get less attached to it and it would be easier to give away. It was fun trying something new, but I was wrong about not getting attached to it. I really enjoyed making this quilt. There was a lot of work involved, but I am so happy with how it turned out. It is no where near perfect, but I still love it.<div><br />
</div><div>(Click on any photo to see it bigger)</div><div><br />
</div><div>This quilt was made with lots and lots of half-square triangles. </div><div><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tons of half-squares and lots of pink and white</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div><br />
</div><div>I then pieced those half-triangles together into a zigzag quilt top: </div><div><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My dog decided to get involved</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<div>For the back I went almost all white back with little blocks of color from the front of the quilt that made a band that alternated different sized sliced of pinks with white. Photos of the back will follow. . . </div><div><br />
</div><div>Next came the longest portion of the whole process-- quilting. This was my first time experimenting with free-motion quilting. I alternated patterns doing free-motion squiggles on the white zigzags and long thin zigzags on the pink (to echo the overall design of the quilt). I created a lot more work for myself going this route, I realize now, but it is what I wanted to do. The top thread was a pale pink and the bottom thread was white.</div><div><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">squiggles and zigzags</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Quilting detail</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div><br />
</div><div>After spending a couple of weeks attacking the quilting in short bursts it was done. And after straightening my edges and making sure the corners were square, it was time to round the corners. I used a bowl as my template on one corner and just copied that over and over-- it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.</div></div><div><br />
</div><div>Again, I had a little helper while doing the photographs for this portion of the process...</div><div><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6195/6094542525_bd7fafe82b_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6195/6094542525_bd7fafe82b_b.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Notice the cute pup as well as those crisp edges</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div>Then it was time to get to binding. I made my own bias-cut binding 2" wide and then got to work pinning it down on the quilt back. </div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6202/6094549131_4f389ecf02_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6202/6094549131_4f389ecf02_b.jpg" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cute roll of binding just waiting to be put to use.</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div>I machine sewed the binding on the quilt back and opted to hand sew the binding in place on the front. Call me a glutton for punishment. It went by much more quickly than I'd anticipated. Slow as I am, I completed it by the time it took me to watch a few shows on Netflix (spread over a couple of days). </div><div><br />
</div><div>A few teasers of the finished quilt--</div><div><br />

</div><div>Now, onto the whole picture: </div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6197/6094562051_7c7716367e_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6197/6094562051_7c7716367e_b.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">This last shot was thrown in to show the texture of this quilt. This is the just completed quilt, and I expect that it will get all the more crinkly and lovely as it gets washed. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6191/6095097250_4c2eb3f839_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6191/6095097250_4c2eb3f839_b.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">And while I have ended up entirely smitten by this quilt, I am still giving it away. It has been a great experience and I realize now that I have it in me to complete quilts. I have a few others planned and a couple more sketched out already. </div>Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-85517312439116453812011-08-16T14:47:00.000-07:002011-08-16T14:47:53.780-07:00Sequoia National ParkLast weekend was my first trip out to Sequoia National Park and it was a blast. I loved every minute of it. The only thing I wished for was more daylight hours. Alas, there was only one day on our schedule for running around and taking in the big trees, so we made the most of it.<br />
<br />
We walked around the Round Meadow and not only got to see so very many giant trees, but also two brown bears. It was so exciting!<br />

Enough story-telling. Here is photographic evidence of this wondrous place:<br />

I love how Polaroids can capture a moment and give you a physical image instantaneously. And yet, I had a couple of other cameras out and about on this trip as well. I dusted off my Holga and two other less often used cameras. Each camera has its own personality and asks me to take photos from different angles and in different ways. I've found that certain cameras are made for certain shots. So once everything is said and done, I should have a few different flavors of California to share. I can't wait to get that film developed. Alas, there is no where local for me to take my 120 format film around here. This means that either I'll have to start developing at home, or I have to deal with paying shipping. Currently I've just been waiting for my infrequent trips north to get my developing done in huge batches, but that gets old, you know?Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-79464038348313229902011-07-28T11:39:00.000-07:002011-07-28T11:40:31.441-07:00ReceskyI'd first written about putting together my DIY TLR camera on my old blog <a href="http://inkpaintphotosandotherstuff.blogspot.com/2010/10/recesky.html">HERE</a>. Normally it is somewhere I hike with friends, but on occasion, I like to go when I know it will be quieter and I walk through the hills and canyons alone.<br />
On one of those quiet days, I took the following Polaroids:<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>Of the above photo, my Flickr friend <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/falling-thru-the-lens/">Jacki </a>wrote, "Like a dream that fades into the light when you wake..." I really love her way with words. For me, words and images occupy separate and distinct places in my brain. If I am thinking in imagery terms, that is when I photograph what is around me. If I am thinking in terms of words and verbal connections, then I write. But writing about my photographs has never been my strong point. It is something for me to work on, for sure.<br />

There were people that came out of the woodwork, so to speak, and tried their hand at using their old Polaroids and found that they could work magic. There were people who had taken an amazing shot months ago and held onto it to share it during Polaroid Week. And there people like me, running around taking road trips so that they'd have a few new sights to share. Granted, I didn't get that far away from home, but I still wanted to try to share a few new things, some stuff out of my comfort zone. . .<br />
So here are the rest of my submission from Polaroid Week:<br />

I missed out last year because I was busy preparing to get married.<br />
<br />
Here are my entries from today:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6131/5927436700_5b303953b3_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6131/5927436700_5b303953b3_b.jpg" width="388" /></a></td></tr>

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6148/5926618907_0860f1696b_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6148/5926618907_0860f1696b_b.jpg" width="323" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kanarra Falls hike</td></tr>
</tbody></table>I chose these two for today because of their similarities and contrast. They are both photos of fresh water, both photographed in southern Utah, and both taken using Polaroids, but that is about where the similarities end.<br />
The first image was taken on my SX70 using new PX680 film from The Impossible Project and the tones went all warm and yellow. On the other hand, the second image was taken using my 350 Land Camera using expired Polaroid ID-UV film and the colors most definitely shifted to cooler tones. So I ended up with a warm square and a cool rectangle of water in the desert.Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-65668437201864979932011-07-11T13:14:00.000-07:002011-07-11T13:16:40.216-07:00Cedar PocketsI keep coming back to this area. (<a href="http://thedesertlovesyou.blogspot.com/2011/06/sun-lit.html">Here</a> and <a href="http://thedesertlovesyou.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-i-spent-my-easter.html">Here</a>) It is one of the closest places out of state that I can get to, and my husband works around here, so it is a well-known stomping ground. I love hiking the mountains around this part of northern Arizona, but even more, I love walking around the river. The Virgin River meanders through Cedar Pockets, a BLM campground and recreation area. While it can get crowded, if you are out hiking first thing in the morning or just around sundown, it can seem like you are the only person around. Walking along the river, all signs of civilization are drowned out-- all you can hear are the sounds of water lapping up onto the "beach" and the noise that standing waves make when they fall into themselves or collide into one another.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6032/5914074986_fe510132b9_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6032/5914074986_fe510132b9_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I grew up an hour away from the coast. I spent many childhood afternoons swimming and building sand castles at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. So while the muddied river water might ruin the illusion for people used to more pristine salt water, I could easily imagine myself at the beach when walking barefoot on the sandy shoreline of the river.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5274/5914074300_7921ab9722_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="397" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5274/5914074300_7921ab9722_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Of course, the vegetation kind of gives away the location. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But if you find a spot where you can sit, preferably with your feet in the water, and you close your eyes, you might be able to think that you are somewhere tropical--especially in the summer when the sun is beating down on you and the sand is radiating heat back up at you and all you can hear is the roar of water rushing past. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is a project that my dear hubby started. He would find large river-tumbled rocks and carry them over one by one until he outlined the path of the trail that lead to the river and beyond. When local boy scouts asked to be given a project, he passed the torch to them, and flagged the path that they could finish marking. I think it looks like art, really. I figured I should go ahead and remedy that. These are the photos I took with my Diana Mini while hiking around. I imagine it was only that much more lonely in its heyday, totally disconnected from civilization. Mormon settlers built the place up around the spring, which made life harder for the Paiute that were living in the area. It was and is a dry, desolate place. It was miles and miles from anywhere, and today there is still very little near it. It was built on beautiful but harsh land and it took tough people to make a living out there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6001/5912463711_44913b8c4b_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6001/5912463711_44913b8c4b_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

<br />
When the first settlers came through, it was a prairie. There are reports that when riding horses through it, the grass came up to the horses' bellies. In some areas the grass grew over five feet tall. I could have disappeared by walking into it. Now the whole area is covered in desert scrub brush, sage, and cheatgrass. They have a small area set aside to try to recreate the mix of grasses that used to grow on the land with ease. I took the following photo while imagining the history of the place, trying to see it covered in a sea of waving blades of grass.<br />

Even in the heat of summer, there are the contrasting tones of sage growing on coral sand with a backdrop of bright blue sky.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/5876149630_f2629c209b_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/5876149630_f2629c209b_b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>It was late afternoon and the shadows were deep and long, and each shape was pronounced. What first caught my attention was the formations. The curve or the rock, the way the short pinnacles reached toward the sky, it just had such an organic nature to it. If you click on the image to see it larger, you'll also see that there is banding near the top edge of the pinnacles-- white sandstone stripes nearly at the tips of the orange.<br />
The colors were also really lovely that time of day. I love red rock against blue sky. I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-33689440407781367732011-06-25T00:05:00.000-07:002011-06-25T00:05:15.931-07:00Desert WillowThis photo of Desert Willow blooms was taken in my front yard. I was using an SX70 camera with The Impossible Projcet's PX70 PUSH! film. This is some of the last of my stash, and I think it was well used on this subject. The flowers are actually a pale pink, and the background was green and orange, but I like the pastel skewed version of reality that PUSH! film provides. <br />

One of my other moth orchids started blooming-- on the day I got back from camping. So of course I had to take a comparison shot. The first to bloom is on the left-- the flowers are much bigger and nearly a solid fuchsia (with tiny little specks of darker colors). The second orchid to bloom (on the right) has smaller flowers and they are white with a blush of fuchsia veins and an interior that is fuchsia/violet. While I wait to finish a roll of 35mm film that will give a truer depiction of the colors, I'll share the Polaroid I have.<br />

We went with the express purposes of gathering river-worn wood, photographing the beauty, and wearing out our dog. We accomplished all of our goals.<br />
<br />
For the first two photographs I waded out into the river to get the shots I wanted. The current was swift and kept pulling the sand out from under my feet, but the excitement was well worth it. I mean, just look at those tones. My previous experiences with ID-UV film tended to shift to aqua tones, but these turned lovely cool blues and violets.<br />

It was a serene day. We walked around, dipped our feet into the river, listened to the rush and roar of the river, and saw standing waves build into white caps and then collapse on themselves. We watched as the red desert around us shifted into cool tones and experienced the drop in temperature as night came on. It was a good day.<br />

We packed the dog up and drove off in search of the last bit of sun before night set in. We decided to drive on the road that follows along the edge of Quail Lake outside of St George, Utah, and it felt like we were chasing the light. We weren't sure that we'd have enough light to take a decent shot. But just after the lake came into view, the sky turned pink and purple and aqua and I knew that was my moment. I just had to stop for a few photos. The one I have readily available to share was taken with my Polaroid SX70 camera, using PX680 Beta film. The others are still waiting to be developed. I only had a handful of minutes to take my photos before the light slipped away and we were left with a quiet evening, so I did my best to take advantage of the opportunity. I took a few photos, and then I just took it in. <div><br />

The next two are experiments. I used Holga close-up lenses help by hand to get right into my subjects. I was shooting on a really bright and hot day, and I think that added to the warm tones that showed up strongly in the following photographs---<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">I have been having loads of fun playing with this film and this particular camera. I am also in a flora stage, apparently. I have taken a few landscape photos, but I keep coming back to the details of individual blooms, blossoms, and leaves a lot lately. And I'm alright with that. </div>Janelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15545419156949325226noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912562015539506931.post-1945754674978075532011-06-06T17:06:00.000-07:002011-06-06T17:39:12.552-07:00Desert BloomsExperiments and new growth in my garden:<br />

There is a rough 6 miles of "road" to traverse before reaching the falls, but that doesn't keep people away. It is a popular destination for locals to sunbathe, picnic, or when the conditions are right, do a little <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janelka/3737378517/sizes/l/in/photostream/">cliff jumping</a>. (In fact, that is just what we did two years ago in July.)<br />
<br />
We went out there on Memorial Day to see how it looked this time of year. There was a lot of snow-melt flooding going on, so there weren't too many other visitors. The ones who were there left soon after my hubby and I showed up and we were left with a two hour window in which to shoot photos without the occasional random person stumbling into a shot.<br />
<br />
It was such a great afternoon-- we had a make-shift picnic on some rock slabs, we took a short hike, and I sketched and took in the sound of water roaring. This is the closest I get to the ocean out here, and I was soaking it up.<br />
<br />
I had a few different cameras at work, but only my Polaroids that are ready to share so far. The first three photos show the falls overflowing:<br />

</div>The color photo was taken on my SX 70 Alpha camera, using <a href="http://shop.the-impossible-project.com/shop/film/colorshade/fi_600_1_px680_ff">PX 680 First Flush</a> film from <a href="http://www.the-impossible-project.com/">The Impossible Project</a>. The black and white photos were taken using a Polaroid Swinger camera and expired (May 2007) Polaroid 667 film.<br />

It's a bit tricky, of course, trying to get as much gear as I can outside without ruining any of it.<br />
<br />
So far my tips and tricks are these: plan ahead, pack only cameras that can be replaced, have a waterproof or water-resistant camera bag AND a coat (So you can dig around in your bag with the coat over the opening to avoid letting the rain in), and don't stray too far from your car. Also, have a couple of towels waiting for you your car, just in case.<br />
<br />
Most of my rainy day photography has been done in spittle type rain, but I have taken a few shots in certifiable rainstorms--mostly under the cover of something. By "cover" I mean things like my car, a bridge, a porch, or my coat pulled up and over my camera as best as I can.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5055/5416967658_8a66d47fae_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5055/5416967658_8a66d47fae_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5188/5658265586_15e41a49b2_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5188/5658265586_15e41a49b2_b.jpg" width="313" /></a></div><br />
Then there are a few cameras that I might make an exception for, ones where I just pull them out and quickly get my shot and then stuff the camera back in the bag. My Polaroid Spectra and Polaroid One cameras get that kind of treatment because I can frame the shot, take the picture, and hide the camera away really quickly. And those cameras didn't cost me an arm and a leg, so I am a little more brutal with them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5069/5674471539_4372a3d70f_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="259" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5069/5674471539_4372a3d70f_b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5164/5279349873_31414dae41_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5164/5279349873_31414dae41_b.jpg" width="270" /></a></div>I've said it before and I'll probably say it again-- I love the way that everything around here changes when storms roll in. Not that I don't love basking in sunshine, but I really do like the occasional thunderstorm.<br />
